What happens to a small resort town when the tourists leave? Retail stores, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses close down. Streets empty of pedestrians and traffic. During this past year, I've been documenting the offseason in Bar Harbor, Maine, USA, through the lens of closed businesses. Photographing the inside of shuttered buildings from their outside facing windows, I observed shelves emptied of sales items, mannequins unclothed, debris and trash on the floor, and chairs flipped and stacked. There was an eloquence to the silence. Where did all the inventory go? Do proprietors think about how their stores will look once they close down? What are the former store employees and customers doing now? These questions led me to this ongoing photographic project. I see quiet shadows, bright reflections, and strong contrasts that color the emptiness of Bar Harbor's offseason.
